Finland places special emphasis on ensuring development interventions it is supporting address the needs and priorities of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, and contribute to the reduction of inequality within and between population groups, with specific attention to gender and location.

Finland's development cooperation supports Myanmar to achieve development outcomes in three thematic areas: good forest governance; peace and democratic governance; and quality, inclusive education.

Good Forest Governance

Finland's aim is to support sustainable, equitable and transparent governance of forest resources as a critical source of well-being and livelihoods in Myanmar, with a focus on improving access to adequate and accurate forest resource information as a basis for planning and decision-making. Further, Finland is supporting a community forestry initiative in Southern Shan, which supports local communities engaged in opium poppy cultivation to develop alternative livelihoods.

Peace and Democratic Governance

Finland's support is geared towards strengthening the inclusive participation of people in Myanmar in peace- and state-building processes. Support is provided for strengthening capacities of democratic institutions, as well as for enhancing opportunities for civil society participation. Furthermore, specific support is provided for improving women's rights and gender equality.

Quality, Inclusive Education

Finland's support to Myanmar places a priority on advancing systemic improvements in education quality and equality, with a focus on strengthening institutional capacities for the delivery of quality education services, including through teacher education, ensuring the needs of children at risk of falling behind are addressed.
