The overall EU strategic objective is rooted in the desire to support peace, security and stability in the country, while promoting inclusive and sustainable growth and poverty reduction, through the on-going reform process. To this end, the EU aims to support political, social and economic development, to foster respect for human rights and to assist the Government in rebuilding its place in the international community.

The EU is providing EUR 804 million support to Myanmar. This includes bilateral support to Myanmar for the period 2014-2020 as specified in the EU's Multiannual Indicative Programme (MIP). The Programme underlines EU's full commitment to support sustainable development and poverty reduction in the country for the benefit of all people living in Myanmar.

The four focal areas of the EU’s cooperation are:

Rural development, Agriculture and Food security (EUR 238 million)

Education (EUR 268 million)

Governance, Rule of law and State capacity building (EUR 133 million)

Peacebuilding support (EUR 78 million)

In addition to the bilateral cooperation support under the MIP, Myanmar will continue to benefit from assistance through other EU thematic and regional instruments and programmes. These cover a wide range of issues, including democracy and human rights, civil society, environment and climate change, human development, trade, investment and private sector development. Myanmar is also eligible for regional programmes, including those implemented through ASEAN.
