The New Zealand Aid Programme is working with the Government of Myanmar and partner organizations across Myanmar to support prosperity, resilience and stability. The Myanmar – New Zealand Joint Commitment for Development (2017 – 2021) agreed a focus on Agriculture, Renewable Energy, Knowledge and Skills, and Disaster Risk Management. In addition, New Zealand is providing technical advice in governance and supporting peace and reconciliation.

The Agriculture portfolio supports the vision of the Myanmar Agricultural Development Strategy through the development of resilient food systems and inclusive market systems. Climate smart agricultural technologies and practices are equipping farmers to build resilient and diversified rural economies. Drawing on New Zealand’s extensive diary technical and business expertise, we are facilitating a more productive and sustainable dairy industry.

The Myanmar- New Zealand Renewable Energy Programme is increasing equitable access to affordable and reliable energy. This is being achieved through supporting off grid production, conducting environmental and social impact assessments to inform resource development, providing technical advice and building capability within both government and the private sector.

New Zealand supports partners along the humanitarian preparedness, response and recovery continuum. We are strengthening the warehousing and logistics capacity of first responders, supporting in-country actors responses to humanitarian emergencies and working to advance mine action.

New Zealand is currently chair of the Peace Support Group and its Working Group. All development and humanitarian support is designed and implemented with a direct line of sight to its contribution towards peace and stability. As such, conflict sensitivity and human rights underpin all technical and financial support provided.

New Zealand is committed to sharing its experience and knowledge in democratic and economic governance. Experts from the New Zealand State Services Commission, Company’s Office and the Chief Ombudsman’s Office are advising on transparency initiatives, public complaint mechanism management, whole of Government approaches particularly in context of ease of doing business, civil service reform and public sector leadership. New Zealand has also shared economic governance models and experience from various Maori Trusts, being innovative businesses that invest profits into the development of their communities and preservation of their culture.

A wide knowledge and skills programme underpin efforts in the above sectors which is building the capability required to achieve Myanmar’s development aspirations.
